There is always someone touting how a worn out American lathe is better than anything from China. They need to run one first before expressing their opinion. Weight in a lathe is your friend. The 9x 20 is pretty light, about equivalent to a Atlas lathe. The 12 x 36 or bigger lathes are pretty hefty (and twice as much money).

Anyone out there with a Central Machinery # 900G Lathe ?? 12" X 36" Gap Bed. I am in need of a parts and breakdown manual. Can't find the one that came with the lathe. Yes, three decades at my previous employer in a job shop environment. Set up, programming and running horizontal CNC mills ( from 40"x 40" to 60" x 100") vertical CNC mills, CNC lathes ( including a 60 hp lathe with a 24" hydraulic chuck or 32" four jaw ) plus manual lathes, Bridgeports plus also did arc, mig and tig welding.

My lathe is an old South Bend Heavy 10inch tool room lathe that apparently did a LOT of facing as the cross slide screw is worn in the middle while the leadscrew has very little wear anywhere on it. The brass nut was totally stripped out on mine when I bought it, and with eBay in its infancy replacement parts were slim pickens.
